Economic and Political Developments • Latin American Countries leaned on the Major Powers after the War • Economic Failures ensued- 1960’s- Chile, Brazil, and Argentina- Regimes • Export Countries- Multinational Corporations • 1970-1982- Debt increase- 27 Billion to 315 Billion • 1980-1990- Move towards democracy • Latin America Society • Population- 1950- 165 Million- 1980 400 Million more then 50 cities of a population of 1 million • Job market was hurt- Bolivia, Peru and Columbia • The USA and the Organization of American States- OAS • Culture • Magic Realism • One Hundred Years of Solitude- Gabriel Garcia Marquez- 1982 Nobel prize • Brasilia- Brazil architecture

Mexico • Mexican Revolution at the turn- Institutional revolutionary party- PRI- 6 year president • 60’-70’s- student protest- Killed hundreds of students • Oil in the 1970’s- only lasted for a minute- Privatization in the 80’s • Vicente Fox- Defeated the PRI candidate in 2000 • Cuba • Fidel Castro- fought against Fulgentro Batista- Jan 3rd 1959 seized Havana • 1960- US put an embargo on Cuba • Realized his fault with the Russians but declared himself a Marxist • Ernesto Che’ Guevara- Argentinean- led this war in Bolivia • Was killed 1967 • Had to rely on the USSR’s bloc until 1989- no illiteracy economy was good
