Exploring Marine Sediments: A Journey to the Seafloor

Join us for an interactive workshop on marine sediments where we will explore the scientific process, analyze seafloor sediment predictions, and investigate the distribution patterns of primary types of marine sediments. Come refine your hypotheses and learn about the fascinating world beneath the ocean's surface.

  1. Pre-workshop assignment. See Activity 1 student exercise in binder = a place for notes Activity 1. Part 1. Stories from the Seafloor • According to the video, is the scientific method linear? • What are 3 things you learned from this video about the PROCESS of science? • What is 1 thing you learned about the oceans or ocean sediments?

  2. Themes in responses: • Research is a very collaborative process. • It is not linear. • It is ongoing, iterative, lots of feedbacks. • It is exciting to learn new stuff: • There was a time in Earth's history the planet was so hot that there was no ice on the land or the oceans. • Climate change is recorded in ocean sediments.

  3. Where to get files: Start from Workshop Program Agenda OR access from USB Activity 1. Part 2. A First Look at Marine Sediment Predictions Your (students’) initial ideas Observations Using Google Earth – see student exercise Visit (virtually) five locations in the Pacific Ocean: First-Look_v4.kmz Make observations about the different types of sediment deposited in the modern ocean Share and compare with the group • What kinds of materials might you expect to find on the seafloor? • Is there any geographic pattern to the distribution of these materials? (and why?)

  4. Activity 1. Part 2. A First Look at Marine Sediment the “Terrain” layer also needs to be left on

  5. Activity 1. Part 2. A First Look at Marine Sediment See next slide

  6. Activity 1. Part 2. A First Look at Marine Sediment Example of sample nomenclature and core photo.

  7. Activity 1. Part 3. Exploring the Distribution of the Primary Types of Sea Floor Sediments • Explore empirical data on the distribution of the five primary marine sediment types (i.e., lithologies) of the sea floor: surficial-sea-floor-sediment-map-v4.kmz • Describe the surficial sea floor distribution of marine sediment types. • Propose hypotheses to explain any distribution patterns that you see.

  8. Activity 1. Part 3. Exploring the Distribution of the Primary Types of Sea Floor Sediments

  9. Activity 1. Part 3. Exploring the Distribution of the Primary Types of Sea Floor Sediments

  10. Activity 1. Part 3. Exploring the Distribution of the Primary Types of Sea Floor Sediments

  11. Activity 1. Part 4. Refining Your Hypotheses on Biogenic Sediment Distribution • Refine your hypotheses on the distribution pattern of calcareous and siliceous oozes based on additional data • World and Regional Sea Surface Temperature.kmz • chlorophyll_kmz_from_nasa_national_.kmz • finding_ccd.kmz • CCD (video) • Discuss your responses to Part 4 questions • Revisit your initial ideas

  12. End of Day 1Road Check
