  1. Educational Satellites Project for Classroom useTom Van den Bon (ZR6TG) AMSAT SA SPACE SYMPOSIUM 2019

  2. What is this ? It’s a CubeSat Satellite(s) Simulator Project ** Work in Progress Project ** Goals: • Create a working satellite platform for Educational Use • It needs to work! (Not a dummy model) • Cheap! • Simulate not only satellite, but also space environment

  3. Why ? • Launching of CubeSats are getting more affordable • Lots of University/Private groups are launching CubeSats • Lots of these CubeSats are dead on arrival • Bring learning about Satellites into the classroom (cheaply) • Promote interest in Satellites/CubeSats (Especially in South Africa)

  4. CanSat • Originally designed around a Soda Can • Originally designed for model rocket launch • Simple to build - Off the shelf Modules • Raspberry PI / Arduino / Micro:Bit Compatible • Different test launch options:- Rockets- High Altitude Balloon- Quadcopter

  5. CanSat Design

  6. CanSat Design

  7. CanSat Design

  8. CubeSat • More realistic - Same Form Size of a 1u CubeSat • Custom Boards - OpenSource • Work in Progress:Done:Transceiver BoardTodo:Main ControllerPower BoardExperiment BoardHigh Altitude Balloon Addon

  9. Transceiver Board • DRA818 Module - UHF/VHF • AFSK Telemetry (FM) - AX.25 Protocol • Arduino Compatible • I2C Communication between other boards and Radio Board • EduSat Connector • Receive and Decode Telemetry at Ground Station

  10. Transceiver Board

  11. Power Board (EPS) • Connections for Solar Panels • Current Measurement (Solar Panels/Batteries) • Solar Panel Controller • Charge Management Controller • Power Distribution

  12. On Board Controller (OBC) • Main Controller • Arduino Compatible • Watchdog

  13. High Altitude Balloon Addon • GPS • Release Interface • IO for Experiment Control

  14. Conclusion • Goal is to create various solutions to bring satellite development into the classroom • All OpenSource - https://github.com/tomvdb/edusat • Project is a work in progress to try out various ideas • Interest from Vaal University of Technology • CanSat Kits soon available at Pi-Shop
