  3. Freedom Songs: Spirituals • Spirituals are similar to hymns/psalms – they use similar language from the Bible, but they have secret meanings to those who know what to listen for. • Messages/meaning • Context • Recording

  4. Split into groups • Take a best guess at some of the codes used in the song • Read through the information about the song…be ready to give the class any background knowledge they might need

  6. Your Task • We’ve looked at a few ways that the abolition cause was promoted and perpetuated – newspaper articles, posters, speeches, spirituals – and now it’s your turn. What would YOU do? • Abolition & Resistance Assessment….see handout. We will do this IN CLASS on Tuesday, April 9. Bring what you need to work on it….
