ELLIS ISLAND • 1892 and 1954 – 24 million immigrants • main immigration port • 1st and 2nd class passengers screened aboard • 3rd class transported to Ellis Island • physical (medical) examination + questioned by officials • the sick or those with criminal records could have been sent back • Isle of Tearsor Isle of Hope • today: Immigration Museum
