  2. Today we will be learning to: • estimate and then check with a tape measure • make and use measuring equipment • record estimates and measured lengths.

  3. Mental Activity Today you are going to practise giving change.

  4. An apple costs 14p. How much change would I get?

  5. A book costs 11p. How much change would I get?

  6. A banana costs 7p. How much change would I get?

  7. An orange costs 14p. How much change would I get?

  8. A rubber costs 2p. How much change would I get?

  9. A drink costs 12p. How much change would I get?

  10. Main Activity Today we are going to estimate lengths and measure using a ruler.

  11. Join some strips of newspaper to make one strip. Estimate the length of strip to be a metre long. You cannot use a ruler to help. You can work individually or in pairs.

  12. Compare the length of your strip of paper against a metre ruler. Decide which label to put the strip with. • more than a metre • about a metre • less than a metre.

  13. A smaller unit would be more useful for small measurements. Could you measure a book in metres?

  14. This unit is called a centimetre. There are one hundred centimetres in a metre.

  15. Group Work Work in the same pairs as yesterday. Each pair should: • measure out 10cm divisions on your ‘metre man’ • measure lengths in the classroom to the nearest 10cm • measure and record your work.
