GroundWinds Update Outline • GWNH/GWHI • Instrument Specs • Status • Schedule • Consistency Checks • Fringe consistency • Photon recycling consistency • Preliminary GWHI Validation Results
GWNH Instrument • Direct-detection Doppler lidar • Operates at 532 nm • 4 W @ 10 Hz • 0.5 meter aperture • High-resolution molecular and aerosol channels • CCD detectors • 0.7-18 km range ASL
GWNH Status • Fully-operational • Operated weekly (weather-permitting) • 2003 mini-MOPA campaign being analyzed
GWNH Schedule • Test bed for BalloonWinds • Weekly operations • Instrument diagnostics • Improve data analysis & products • Science • BW Validation campaign in Jan 06
Direct-detection Doppler lidar Operates at 355 nm 4 W @ 10 Hz 0.5 meter aperture High-resolution molecular channel CCD detector 4.0-21 km range ASL GWHI Instrument
GWHI Status • Fully-operational • Operated daily (weather-permitting) • June 2005 validation campaign being analyzed
GWHI Schedule • Daily operations (UH) • Instrument diagnostics & data consistency • Improve data analysis & products • Incorporate into local models • Science • Mauna Kea Seeing Campaign July 05 • 8 radiosonde launches before Nov 05

Recycling Consistency IILOS Velocities (GWNH) No Recycling Recycling Molecular Aerosol
GWHI Validation Campaign • Objective is to quantify the precision, accuracy, sensitivity, and the photon-recycling performance enhancement of LOS velocity measurements. • Lidar made 10-minute measurements to the W, NW, N, NE, E, and back to W. • Radiosondes launched from the site for inter-comparison.
