  4. Our parable was told due to a question. Are you surprised that a new thing doesn't combine with an old one?

  5. Our parable this afternoon is about that Jesus wants to give us a lesson The kingdom of heaven is NEW

  6. Parable number 22 John 1:17-18 NKJV[17] For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. [18] No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

  7. The parable and its frame. How did everything happen? Matthew made a feast in Jesus' honor. Luke 5:29.

  8. They asked a question: Luke 5:30 NKJV[30] And their scribes and the Pharisees complained against His disciples, saying, "Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?" Jesus is happy and is not paying attention to them...

  9. Seeing that Jesus did not answer their question the way that they wanted, they asked another question: Luke 5:33-35 33Then they said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?” 34 And He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35“But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.”

  10. Tired of their complaints, Jesus spoke and told this parable: Luke 5:36-39. 36Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38“But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved. 39“And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’ ”

  11. Let's notice that what Jesus said is connected with the O.T. Why did they criticize Jesus? They didn't understand that A BIG CHANGE was about to come.

  12. Jesus talked about the bigchange. Who did the patch represent? Patch = Moses and the old law. Jesus didn't come to "patch" the old law.

  13. Don't get confused: Christianity is not just an ADDITION to Moses’ law as many believe. Christianity is a COMPLETELY NEW LAW.

  14. Reason why the old garment was thrown out: Jeremiah 31:31-34 31“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 32“not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. 33“But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34“No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

  15. Matthew 5:17,18. 17“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18“For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

  16. Galatians 3:19. 19What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; anditwas appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator.

  17. Hebrews 7:18,19. 18For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness, 19 For the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, thereisthe bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.

  18. Hebrews 8:7. 7For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. Moses Jesus

  19. Their criticism was unwarranted. Jesus’ purpose was not to leave them only with what they already had. Jesus would fulfill the law of Moses and then replace it. Jesus coming was not to “patch” but to make NEW. John 13:34

  20. JESUS EMPHASIZED THE INCOMPATIBILITY OF THE NEW AND THE OLD Consider the problem of putting new wine into old wineskins The old wineskins burst. New wine and old wineskins are incompatible. The new wine is also lost. Christianity and the law are also incompatible.

  21. Galatians 5:2-6 NKJV[2] Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. [3] And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. [4] You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. [5] For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. [6] For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.

  22. Contrasts between theOld and the New. 1. The old was based on Moses' Law. 1. The New one on Jesus' law.

  23. Contrasts between theOld and the New. 2. The Old required perfection in it's followers. 2. The new required faith, in Jesus' perfection.

  24. Contrasts between theOld and the New. 3. Old was earned through observing its tenants. 3. New is a free gift of God's grace received through man's faith.

  25. Contrasts between theOld and the New. 4. The Old glorified the keeper of the law. 4. The New glorifies the Son.

  26. Contrasts between theOld and the New. 5. Old was impossible to attain 5. New is freely available to all.

  27. Contrasts between theOld and the New. 6. Old produced frustation and bondage. 6. New produces assurance and freedom.

  28. Contrasts between theOld and the New. 7. Old could point to something else. 7. The New is that something else.

  29. Jesus came to provide some new things. What things? New City Heb.12:22 2 Corinthians 5:17 New Creation A New Name Revelation 2:17 Newness of Spirit Rom.7:6 New Teaching Mark.1:27 A new and living way Heb.10:20 Newness of Life Rom.6:4

  30. 2 Corinthians 3:6. 2 Corinthians 3:6 NKJV[6] who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
