  4. MARS Need to find dates for Arjan, Michael and Zinur Need to find a date for the induction interview for Daniel Offices: the section will move to the third floor… all of us Staff, fellows and students Diverse Section meeting 13/01/2012

  5. LHC operation will start with powering tests in February LHC beam operation is schedule to start 7 March (possibly a few days later) LHC operation until end of November Then the powering system to be tested for operation at 6.5 – 7 TeV Long shutdown I (LS1) for LHC will start then CSCM (thermal amplifier) tests: very likely to be done for one sector at the start of LS1 Beam operation will resume after summer in 2014 Chamonix LHC workshop 6-10 February 2011 Energy likely to be 4 TeV in 2012 Expected integrated luminosity in 2012: 16 fb-1 Some info on LHC Section meeting 13/01/2012

  6. Restart of LHC magnet powering system for operation at 4 TeV Ensure safe LHC beam operation during 2012 Prepare LHC powering tests at end of 2012 – in view of later operation at 6.5 – 7 TeV, including CSCM (thermal amplifier) Modelling and documentation of the LHC magnet powering circuits Prepare shutdown activities Preparing LHC for operation at higher energy Understanding beam losses, in particular UFOs Understanding quench limits (workshop to be organised in June or September) CLIC: achieve common understanding of strategy for machine protection Workshop to be organised in June HiRadMat: perform beam tunnelling experiment RAMS studies for LHC, ITER and other accelerators (Med Austron) Failure catalogue for LHC, possibly extension to other accelerators Main activities and challenges Section meeting 13/01/2012

  7. Involvement in LHC machine operation and protection related to beam – MPP and MPPr (Daniel W., Juan, Maria) understanding quenches in presence of beam (Arjan, Daniel W.) Powering system (Arjan, Daniel W., Emmanuele, Zinur) LHC maximum energy and diode bypass (thermal amplifier): Quench propagation, CSCM (Arjan, Daniel W., Zinur) Modelling of LHC circuits and comparison with experimental data (Emmanuele, Arjan, Evangelia) Preparation for splice consolidation during shutdown (Arjan, Daniel M.) LHC hazard catalogue and dependability studies (Sigrid, Andrea) Collaboration with ITER for machine protection (Sigrid) RAMS studies for the LHC and ITER protection systems HiRadMat (Juan) calculations and preparing an experiment for shock beam impact on matter commissioning the HiRadMat beam line CLIC machine protection(Michael and Carlos) Activities Section meeting 13/01/2012

  8. Michael Jonker, Rüdiger Schmidt, Juan Blanco Outreach and community service (presenting CERN to the public, teachers programme) Rüdiger Schmidt Lecturing, DESY advisory committee, IPAC organising committee, HB 2012 session chair, German committee for accelerator physics Michael Jonker Deputy RSO Work on ALARA review working group RSSO discussions (Radiation Safety Support Officer) Arjan Verweij TSC (Technical Student Committee), AFC (Associate + Fellows Committee) deputy for TE SIPB scientific info policy board for TE Other activities Section meeting 13/01/2012

  9. New post (replacement of Nuria) planned for Spring Electrical engineer or applied physicist, mainly on magnet powering system and modelling PhD student (Florian Burkart) is likely to join us in late spring Topics to be defined, but will be related to beam induced damage and quenches Possibly another PhD student will join to work on issues related to the powering system During LS1, are there any tasks in our team that require help from EICs? Outlook Section meeting 13/01/2012

  10. How to go about circuit screening? Presentation on ITER Presentation on Circuit Screening Circuit modelling Documentation and data bases Questions and TE-TM meetings Section meeting 13/01/2012
