  6. Counting Method When working out time difference we will use the Counting Method. This method will always work. 60 mins = 1hr 3 hrs 6 mins Example : Find the time difference between 08 46 hrs and 11 52 hrs Hrs Mins nearest hour www.mathsrevision.com 08 46  09 00 14 hours 09 00  11 00 2 What’s left? + 11 00  11 52 52 2 66 Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  7. Counting Method Example : Find the time difference between 02 37 hrs and 23 49 hrs Hrs Mins nearest hour 02 37  03 00 23 hours 03 00  23 00 20 What’s left? + 23 00  23 49 49 www.mathsrevision.com 20 72 21hrs 12mins Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  10. Distance Working Out Distance Learning Intention Success Criteria • Understand the distance formula. • 1. We are learning how to work out simple distance. • 2. Apply the formula to calculate simple distance. www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  11. Distance Working out Distances Imagine you were travelling in a train at a steady speed of 80km/hr. In 1 hour you travel : 80 x 1 = 80 km In 2 hours you travel : 80 x 2 = 160 km In 3 hours you travel : 80 x 3 = 240 km www.mathsrevision.com Can you guess what the formula is : in symbols Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  12. Distance Example : A racing car travelled at 50 km/hr. What is the distance covered in 6 hours ? Working www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  13. Distance Now try Lifeskills Ex 3 Ch5 (page 42) www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  14. Starter Questions www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  15. Speed Working Out Speed Learning Intention Success Criteria • Understand the speed formula. • 1. We are learning how to calculate simple speed. • 2. Apply the formula to calculate simple speed. www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  16. Speed Working Out Speed Imagine you sailed 45 kilometres between two islands and it took 3 hours. In 3 hours you travel : = 45 km In 1 hour you travel : 45 ÷ 3 = 15 km This means your speed is : 15km/hr www.mathsrevision.com Can you guess what the formula is : in symbols Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  17. Speed Example : Sean flies to Majorca on holiday , a distance of 2500km. It took 4hrs to get there. What was the plane’s average speed? Working www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  18. Speed Now try Lifeskills Ex 4 Ch5 (page 43) www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  19. Starter Questions 4 cm www.mathsrevision.com 6cm Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  20. Time Working Out Time Learning Intention Success Criteria • Remember the time formula. • 1. We are learning how to calculate simple time. • 2. Apply the formula to calculate simple time. www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  21. Basic Fractional Hours You should already know : www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  22. Hrs Mins to Decimal Time Converting Hrs Mins to Decimal Time To convert minutes to decimal hours we simply divide minutes by 60. Example : 48 minutes to decimal is = 0.8 hr www.mathsrevision.com = 2.25 hr Example : 2hr 15 minutes to decimal is Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  23. Hrs Mins to Decimal Time Calculate the decimal hour value for minutes below. 9.75 hrs Convert 9 hrs 45 mins into hours 7.25 hrs Convert 7 hrs 15 mins into hours www.mathsrevision.com 6.5 hrs Convert 6 hrs 30 mins into hours Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  24. Hrs Mins to Decimal Time Converting Hrs Mins to Decimal Time Try and remember the more common decimal hours 6 mins → 0.1 hrs 12 mins → 0.2 hrs 18 mins → 0.3 hrs 24 mins → 0.4 hrs 30 mins → 0.5 hrs www.mathsrevision.com 36 mins → 0.6 hrs 42 mins → 0.7 hrs 48 mins → 0.8 hrs 54 mins → 0.9 hrs Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  25. Hrs Mins to Decimal Time Converting Hrs Mins to Decimal Time Calculate the decimal hour value for minutes below. 0.3hrs 0.7hrs 0.6hrs 0.5hrs 0.2hrs 0.1hrs www.mathsrevision.com 0.9hrs 0.4hrs Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  26. Hrs Mins to Decimal Time Converting Decimal Time to Hrs Mins You should already know : To change minutes to a decimal time ‘divide by 60’ www.mathsrevision.com To convert back to and minutes we do the opposite : To change decimal time to minutes ‘multiply by 60’ Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  27. Hrs Mins to Decimal Time Converting Decimal Time to Hrs Mins To change decimal time to minutes ‘multiply by 60’ Example : 0.7 hrs to minutes is = 42 mins www.mathsrevision.com 3.4 hrs to hours and minutes is Example : = 3 hrs 24 mins Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  29. Hrs Mins to Decimal Time Converting Decimal Time to Hrs Mins Calculate the hours and minutes for theses decimal hours 4hrs 42mins 1hr 48mins 4hrs 36mins www.mathsrevision.com 1hr 24mins 3hrs 18mins Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  30. Time Working Out Time Imagine you flew 800 miles to Paris and the average speed of the plane was 200 miles/hr. To travel 200 miles takes 1 hour : To travel 800 miles takes : 800 ÷ 200 = 4 hours www.mathsrevision.com Can you guess what the formula is : in symbols Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.
