  1. 3 straight lines = 3 sides sides meet at a vertex Measurement and Geometry 29

  2. Regular Irregular Measurement and Geometry 29

  3. Investigation: Have or draw triangles. Measure the triangle’s sides to determine whether they are the same or different lengths. Compare the triangle’s vertices by folding a piece of paper to make one of the vertices, then checking to see if the other vertices are the same or different sizes. Draw the triangle, and label it regular or irregular. Reflection: What is a regular shape? What is an irregular shape? Problem Solving I drew a regular triangle. What might it look like? Problem Solving I drew an irregular triangle. What might it look like? Measurement and Geometry 29

  4. symmetry 1 line of symmetry 3 lines of symmetry 0 lines of symmetry Measurement and Geometry 29

  5. G G Rigid G Measurement and Geometry 29

  6. Investigation: Problem Solving Mina wrote a letter with 1 line of symmetry. What letter might she have written? Have or draw triangles. Identify any lines of symmetry. Describe any lines of symmetry. Does each line of symmetry go through a vertex and the centre of the side opposite the vertex? Reflection: What is a line of symmetry? Problem Solving Wendy drew a triangle. None of the sides were equal length. What could Wendy’s triangle look like? How many lines of symmetry did Wendy’s triangle have? Make triangles from sticks. Test for rigidity by pushing on the vertices. Reflection: How are triangles rigid shapes? Problem Solving Which shape has no lines of symmetry?   a) b) c) Problem Solving How many lines of symmetry does this letter have? H Measurement and Geometry 29

  7. Measurement and Geometry 29

  8. Investigation: Have craft sticks of 3 different lengths. Make triangles. Record and label your triangles regular or irregular. Can you make a triangle with all combinations of craft sticks, for example, 1 long straw and 2 short craft sticks? Why? Reflection: What is a regular triangle? What is an irregular triangle? Measurement and Geometry 29

  9. Investigation: Have a digital photo of your face. Make 3 copies (copy and paste ‘in front of text’), totalling 4. Crop each face in half – 2 with right part remaining, and 2 with left part remaining (double click on picture and select crop.) Reflect (flip) one left part and 1 right part (double click on the part, select rotate, select flip horizontal). Join the 2 left parts adding a line down the centre. Join the 2 right parts, adding a line down the centre. For example, Discuss whether your face has symmetry and whether the line is a line of symmetry. You could also investigate symmetry in the faces of famous people. Reflection: What is symmetry? Measurement and Geometry 29

  10. Investigation: Write some lower case and upper case letters. Which letters have symmetry? Reflection: What is a line of symmetry? Measurement and Geometry 29

  11. Investigation: • Create symmetrical blob art works by • • folding a page in the centre, • • unfolding the page, • • squeezing small amounts of differently coloured paint on to one half of the page, • • then refolding the page. • When unfolded a symmetrical picture will result. • Reflection: What is a line of symmetry? Measurement and Geometry 29

  12. Investigation: Go on a symmetry hunt, looking for symmetry in objects and shapes in the room or outside. Reflection: What is symmetry? Measurement and Geometry 29

  13. Investigation: Play ‘mirrors’ with a friend. Stand facing each other in identical positions. Take turns to make a move which the other child mirrors. For example, one child raises their right arm and the other raises their left arm in unison. Reflection: What is symmetry? Measurement and Geometry 29

  14. Investigation: Create art works using only triangles. You could base your art works on Cubism, examples of which are freely available on the internet. Reflection: What is a regular triangle? What is an irregular triangle? Measurement and Geometry 29

  15. Investigation: Have a real or virtual geoboard (freely available on the internet). Make and describe different kinds of triangles, including regular and irregular. Identify lines of symmetry. Reflection: What is a regular triangle? What is an irregular triangle? What is symmetry? Measurement and Geometry 29
