Feudalism • Feudalism was created around 800 A.D. • It is a government that people in the Middle ages used. • The kings controlled their land by dividing land into fiefs. • Nobles had to swear an oath of fealty to their king. • They had to swear to be kind to the king, to fight for the king and help keep the peace.
Knights • Knights had to live by a code of conduct/Chivalry • The word chevalier comes from the word Chivalry which means horsemen • Since the knights rode on horses the knights were called “Chevalier” • They had to have good manners and they had to know music and poetry. • Each knight had to be a good Christian and defend the church
Magna Carta • In 1215 King John of England was forced by his vassals to sign the Magna Carta • It stated that the king couldn’t violate the rights of free men and women by setting unfair taxes, take their goods, or labor • One of the laws states that “No Sheriff can take someone’s resources unless he first pays for it • “The right’s of the English church shall always be protected, and cannot be altered by the government” This is the first law of Magna Carta
