Symptoms • Tremor • Rigidity • Postural Instability • Bradykinesia (slowing of movement) • Creates difficulties in the act of movement, from the planning of initiating to the execution of movement. • Disorders of speech, cognition, mood, behavior, and thought • Excessive sweating and oily skin • Decreased blink rate; dry eyes • Pill-rolling
treatment • No cure • Levodopa • Converted into dopamine • Dopamine agonists
Risk & protective factors • Risk: injection of MPTP and exposure to chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides kill dopaminergic neurons • Protection: caffeine consumption, smoking tobacco, and vitamin C & D
