  3. STRENGTHS Defending their home gave them a strong reason to fight. Boys learned to ride horses and shoot guns at a young age. Better officers. Wealthy young men often went to military school. WEAKNESSES Few factories to produce weapons and other supplies. Few railroads to transport troops. Governments in the South were more loyal to their state than the Confederacy.   8. Strategies of the Union • The Union planned to use its navy to blockade southern ports and cut off trade. • In the East, Union generals wanted to seize Richmond, Virginia, the Confederate Capital. • In the West, the Union planned to seize control of the Mississippi River.

  9. Strategies of the Confederacy • South wanted to fight a defensive war until the North became tired of fighting. • The South also counted on European support.
