  4. LAB WRITE UPS • I am going to help you out by providing a template for your lab. This will save you time writing. Please attach this into pages 12of your science notebook. • I will be looking for this at the notebook check tomorrow.

  5. Chart to be completed before we start:

  6. Materials • Large clear rectangular cake pan • 2 droppers • 3 small candles (or heat source) • Box of matches • Three cups • Ice • Gallon ziploc bag • Red and blue markers

Hypothesis • I hypothesize if air is warmed in the atmosphere, it moves _____________ in relation to the colder regions because __________________________. • I hypothesize if air is cooled in the atmosphere, it moves ____________ in relation to the warmer regions because __________________________.

  8. Procedures • Fill the cake panwith water. • Place the three cups, upside downon the lab table, forming a triangle that the cake pancan rest on and remain stable. Place the cake panon the three cups. • Light the candles and place them in a line underneath one end of the cake pan. This end of the cake panrepresents the warm equatorial regions of the earth. • Put some ice in the large Ziploc bag and place the bag of ice in the cake panon the side opposite the candle. This end of the cake panrepresents the cold polar regions of the earth.

  10. 5. After the cake pan has rested undisturbed for a few minutes, place several drops of blue food coloring in a line along the bag of ice, near where it touches the water. 6. Carefully place several drops of red food coloring into the water in a line along the BOTTOM of the cake pandirectly above the candles. 7. Watch the motion of the colored water and answer the following questions.
