  1. Year 10 ICT ECDL/ICDL IT Security

  2. What is it about? • This module sets out essential concepts and skills relating to the ability to understand main concepts underlying the secure use of ICT in daily life. It also teaches us to use relevant technologies and applications to maintain a secure network connection, use the internet safely and securely, and manage data and information appropriately.

  3. Goals of this Module • Understand the key concepts relating to the importance of secure information and data, physical security, privacy and identity theft. • Protect a computer, device or network from malware and unauthorised access. • Understand the types of networks, connection types and network specific issues including firewalls. • Browse the World Wide Web and communicate on the internet securely. • Understand security issues related to communications including email and instant messaging. • Back up and restore data appropriately and safely, and securely dispose of data and devices.

  4. Online Behaviour • Staying Safe Online just needs a little bit of Common Sense • As most of you would know, some awful things happen on the internet, but that isn’t a reason to stop using it, you just have to use your head!

  5. Protect Your Personal Details • When communicating with someone over the Internet you should never give them your personal details. Especially your full name, address or bank details. • Don’t even give this to people you know, it could be someone pretending to be them.

  6. Ignore Unwanted E-Mails • If you get a dodgy-looking email from someone you don’t know, DELETE it. • Don’t open it or forward it on to other people. • If you open the email, NEVER open files attached to it. NEVER click on hyper links in these emails either.

  7. Think Twice Before Meeting Online Friends • If you’ve met someone online, say through a chat room or social networking site, it’s safer not to meet up with them in real life. • It is incredibly easy for someone to lie about themselves over the internet. You never know what people may lie about on the internet.

  8. Be Careful when Using Webcams • When you are using a webcam, don’t assume that it’s just you and them – there could be people watching you that you can’t see. It’s also pretty easy to record a webcam feed, so anything silly that you do might come back to haunt you.

  9. Avoid Pornographic Websites • A lot of pornographic websites are breeding grounds for viruses and other unpleasant programs. The best advice is to steer clear of them. • Never download or install any software that websites ask/tell you to, unless you know what you are installing.
