SPIRE-8 SPIRE Brokerage event October 22nd 2013 SPIRE 8– 2015: Pre-processing of wastes for increased recycling Project Idea Presentation
OrganizationSwerea MEFOS • Swerea MEFOS is an independent research institute, and its business concept is applied research, technical development and consulting in process metallurgy, heating, metalworking, environmental engineering and energy efficiency mainly for the ferrous and non-ferrous industry. Research is carried out in collaborative research projects or in projects on contract basis, financed by individual companies. • Swerea MEFOS is well known worldwidefor its unique large scale pilot plant equipment in metallurgy and metalworking and its ability to perform very large research projects. • We have approx. 100 employees, 55 of which are research engineers. • Our primary research areas are: • Project management, operational and applied engineering for major EU and pilot projects. • Metallurgical process technology, including heating and machining, particularly reduction metallurgy, alloys, energy and gasification technology. • Process integration. • Measurement techniques and process analysis. • Computer modelling, simulation and calculations, particularly CFD and FEM technology. • Environmental and residual product technologies. • Swerea MEFOS is a part of the Swerea group, which in turn is part of RISE Research Institutes of Sweden.
Project Idea ConceptPre-processing of wastes for increased recycling • Solids handling for intensified process technology • Improved downstream processing of mixtures in process industries Use of drying and fractionation technologies for further processing and recovery of waste materials with high moisture content and/or of fine particle size distribution using waste heat not presently recovered. Materials as e.g; • Sludge from process gas cleaning, slurries recovered in various industrial sectors or in the communities • Intermediate products or waste streams in pre-processing waste (e.g. in plastic processing, recovery of textile etc)
Idea ImpactPre-processing of wastes for increased recycling • Increased resource efficiency at the industries at which the methods are applied • Technology applicable at different industrial sectors • Significant reduction of material losses • Reduced amount of waste produced by the industrial process and decreased need for landfill • Transfer of waste to “new” raw materials for internal or external use • Benefits to SMEswith innovative technologies or requirements for support for cooperation in recycling small waste streams
Possible Project ConsortiumPre-processing of wastes for increased recycling • Steel industry, non-ferrous industry • Waste processing industry for processing of e.g. plastics, textile, batteries • Paper mills • Communities in European countries • Research Institute (MEFOS, ?) • University (LTU?) • Process owners for drying (freeze drying, press filters etc), fractionation • Industrial sectors as possible users of recovered materials
Looking for partners… Pre-processing of wastes for increased recycling • Other technology owners/interested parties!
