Introductions • Meet and Greet: Thursday, Sept. 5, 3-4:30 • Grad College Welcome Reception: Aug. 26, 4-6, Illini Union A,B,C, and South Lounge • Head: Brenda Farnell • Director of Graduate Studies: Laura Shackelford • Administrative Staff: • Karla Harmon, Office Administrator, Assistant to the Head • Joyce Dowell, Graduate Program Coordinator • Zach Langheim and Anna Morris, Department Accountants

Evaluation of Progress • Twice per year – onceby sub-disciplinary faculty, once by full faculty • At end of each semester, provide “semi-annual evaluation” form (available online) and CV to adviser(s) • Adviser(s) will provide written summary of evaluations with recommendations/concerns • BE PROACTIVE

  9. BIOLOGICAL ANTHROPOLOGY • One course from each of 5 intellectual clusters • Evolutionary theory and genetics • Evolution and functional anatomy • Behavior and Ecology • Development, Energetics and Disease • Research Methods in Biological Anthropology

  10. ARCHAEOLOGY • One semester of social theory/ethnography (by end of year 2) • Core courses in sequence • 461 The History of Archaeological Theory • 561 Archaeological Theory • 410 Research Design in Anth or 511 Proposal Writing • Two courses from a METHODS CLUSTER • Two from a REGIONAL CLUSTER • One from a TOPICAL CLUSTER • Prior to Prelims, show competency in: • Statistics • Field Methods • Analytical Methods (specific to individual research)

SOCIOCULTURAL/LINGUISTIC ANTHROPOLOGY • Two semesters of social theory/ethnography by end of year 2 • Two 400- or 500-level geographical area courses: one in your region, one outside your region of interest. • A pre-fieldwork seminar (such as Methods of Cultural Anthropology [Anth 411]). • Courses in 3 core themes. For example (but not limited to): • Colonialism/Postcolonialism/Transnationalism; Gender/Sexuality/Feminist Anthropology/Queer studies; Kinship/Family/Social structure; Language in culture/Discourse analysis; Race/Ethnicity/ Nationalism; Body/Personhood/Self; History/Memory; Religion/Cosmology/Ritual; Work/Class/Economy; Materiality/ Environment/Ecology
