SteppingStones of Technology2 year grant (6/1/09-5/30/11) • GOALS: • Create a 500 item kit for LSD & JMA • Evaluate the multimedia presentation and implement changes accordingly. • Evaluate the hardware. • Research best practices for using LAMBERT – i.e. group setting, teacher-directed individual setting; student-initiated play Shari Shari
Partners – Louisiana School for the Deaf, the Louisiana PPEP (Parent Pupil Education Program), & the Jean Massieu Academy for the Deaf
PPEP Feedback • Parents were very enthusiastic and most ask where they could get their own set. • The biggest finding was that the hearing siblings and peers of the Deaf child started learning sign! • The PPEP teachers wanted a longer, slower video with the ASL inserted more often. They also wanted enhanced audio for the hard-of-hearing kids. • They used the manipulatives & the pictures of the environmental words but did not put the cards on objects in the home. • Some used LAMBERT in context of the curriculum – i.e. animal sounds for HH.
Special Presentations …. LAMAR University Recommendation was to include sample ASL sentences for a natural language approach.
Special Presentations …. Dominican Republic …. The school uses ASL and written Spanish so we modified the sample kit for them.
Website & Materials Video Library is available on the web! We also created a Developer’s Guide.
Original Multimedia Preparation Created with Adobe Premier, Sign Smith Studio, Adobe Flash, & in-house software
Revised Multimedia Preparation Now includes more signing, longer pauses, & sample sentences
LAMBERT expansion - QUIZ Mode Although not a formal part of the grant, we have also expanded LAMBERT to work in quiz mode where a video is shown & the child must select the correct object to scan. We are currently pilot testing it at LSD.
News LAMBERT is funded through a Stepping Stones of Technology Grant . Due mostly to this project, we were awarded Technology Educators of the Year by the Louisiana Technology Council.
Related Projects MBA Bound – funded through NCTI – expands Lambert to books! It is a joint project with Burton Vision.
Future Plans We have submitted a Phase II Stepping Stones grant to conduct test the effectiveness of LAMBERT in 18 schools for the Deaf We are also working on expanding to modifiers (verbs and adjectives) and are pursuing other projects. Send us an email if you are interested in collaborating! Dr. Robert Hancock robert.hancock@selu.edu Dr. Becky Sue Parton becky.parton@selu.edu
