Background. Research has shown that the maximum growth in turf and roots of four creeping bentgrass cultivars occurred in late May and early June. Declines in turf quality, leaf area index, green leaf biomass, and photosynthetic capacity in those cultivars occurred in late July and August. Along with the decline in turf quality, severe root dieback also occurred in July and August, especially at the surface in the top 3 centimeters of soil.
