WHAT IS A RESUME? • Your self-marketing tool • A snapshot of what you have to offer; not your whole life history • Focuses on your FUTURE, not your past • A concise 1-2 page outline of your skills that relate to the job you are seeking
Purpose of a Resume YOU: • To get an interview • Self-awareness & interview preparation EMPLOYER: • Do you have the skills we need? • Are you going to “fit” in? • How soon before you can be productive? • How motivated are you to do the job well?
Where to Start • Determine what skills, knowledge and experience are needed • Where to obtain this information? • Job description • Informational interviews/research • Career software – DISCOVER, EUREKA, or cacareerzone.org Identify the top 3-4 skills needed for the job Focus on employer’s need, not your “objective”
What to Include • Work experience • Related volunteer experience • Internships • Education • Other facts relevant to the job you seek
What to Emphasize Ask: What makes me different from other candidates with a similar background? What are my accomplishments? (Your job duties are not accomplishments) What are my personal traits? What are my transferable skills?
Evaluate Yourself • Energy, drive, initiative • Problem solving • Personal growth • Leadership – motivating or leading others • Commitment • Setting and achieving goals • Academic excellence
Chronological Emphasizes career progression Strong work history Strong ed. history Moving up career ladder Skills are listed chronologically under each job title Functional Combination Emphasizes skills & accomplishments Changing careers Little or no work history Accomplishments in school or volunteer Skills are listed functionally, in skill groups that relate to the objective. Format Tips • Use common business fonts: Arial, Times Roman, Tahoma • Use a font size between 10 and 12 and slightly larger for the headings • Use bullets and write in phrases, not sentences
YOU ARE READY TO BEGIN!Heading • This is your “branding.” Use it on your cover letter, reference page, thank you note, etc. • Make it distinctive but professional and business-like • Include name, address, phone (home and/ cell), and e-mail address
Objective • Shows what you can do for the employer, it is NOT about your personal goals • Your resume is built around your objective • Use the specific title, if known
Summary of Qualifications • 4-6 bulleted points – be brief! Includes: • Number of years of related experience • Personal traits, characteristics & skills • Education, training or certification in field • Key accomplishment(s) • Employment-related honors and awards • Specific skills related to job, i.e. computer skills, foreign language, areas of expertise
Education In reverse chronological order (most recent first) • Names & locations of institutions • Show degree, license or certifications • Show date degree or certificated awarded or anticipated date of completion • GPA if 3.5 or above • Course titles (if applicable) • Honors and awards
Experience In reverse chronological order (most recent first) • Includes paid and unpaid volunteer work and internships – most recent first • Company name, job title, dates employed, brief description of job duties • Be consistent • Dates, titles, format
Key Words • Degrees (Nursing, BA in Marketing • Industry certifications (CPA, CCNA) • Job Titles (IT Manager, Receptionist) • Computer applications (Word, Excel) • Employer or school names • Hard skills (desktop publishing, HAZMAT) • Soft skills (teambuilding, customer service)
