A New Approach to Preservation Metadata for Scientific Data A Real World Example Ruth Duerr, Ron Weaver, Mark A. Parsons
Outline • Preservation Standards and Metadata • NSIDC systems • OPS & Preservation Metadata Prototype A New Approach to Preservation Metadata for Scientific Data : A Real World Example IGARSS Conference, Denver CO August 2, 2006
OAIS Reference Model • A CCSDS/ISO standard for archiving digital objects • Requirements for an archive • Terminology definitions • Functional and information models A New Approach to Preservation Metadata for Scientific Data : A Real World Example IGARSS Conference, Denver CO August 2, 2006
Content Information Preservation Description Information Packaging Information Package 1 Descriptive Information About Package 1 OAIS Information Packages Adapted from CCSDS 650.0-B-1 A New Approach to Preservation Metadata for Scientific Data : A Real World Example IGARSS Conference, Denver CO August 2, 2006
OAIS Reference Model • Neither a design nor implementation standard A New Approach to Preservation Metadata for Scientific Data : A Real World Example IGARSS Conference, Denver CO August 2, 2006
PREMIS Preservation Metadata Data Dictionary • Developed by OCLC/RLG sponsored working group • Maintained by MARC standards office of the Library of Congress • Detailed schema for primarily the content and preservation description components of the OAIS Reference Model A New Approach to Preservation Metadata for Scientific Data : A Real World Example IGARSS Conference, Denver CO August 2, 2006

NSIDC Institutional Relationships Part of the University of Colorado Within the CU Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) Cryospheric and Polar Processes Division Chartered by NOAA’s National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service. Affiliated with the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) Funded by NASA, NOAA, NSF, and others at the program level Part of the World Data Center system A New Approach to Preservation Metadata for Scientific Data : A Real World Example IGARSS Conference, Denver CO August 2, 2006
Our Mission To make fundamental contributions to cryospheric science and excel in managing data and disseminating information in order to advance understanding of the Earth system. Data Management and Distribution Outreach International Data Activities Research A New Approach to Preservation Metadata for Scientific Data : A Real World Example IGARSS Conference, Denver CO August 2, 2006
Data • Data Holdings • ~600 digital data sets • ~120 TB archive currently • ~400 are publicly available • Data Systems • NASA ECS system • Custom NSIDC systems with a central data set catalog A New Approach to Preservation Metadata for Scientific Data : A Real World Example IGARSS Conference, Denver CO August 2, 2006
NSIDC Data Catalog • Contains metadata about each published data set • GCMD, FGDC compliant metadata • Used to drive web page creation • Did not contain packaging or preservation information A New Approach to Preservation Metadata for Scientific Data : A Real World Example IGARSS Conference, Denver CO August 2, 2006
OPS & Preservation Metadata Prototype • NSIDC developed draft metadata model • Model tested with CLPx data sets (summer ‘05) • Model testing coincided with release of V1 of the PREMIS data dictionary • Implementation this last spring/summer • An extension to NSIDC’s data set catalog A New Approach to Preservation Metadata for Scientific Data : A Real World Example IGARSS Conference, Denver CO August 2, 2006
OPS & Preservation Metadata Prototype • Goals • Provide a uniform mechanism for recording packaging and preservation metadata • Lay groundwork for future automation • Improve NSIDC data management processes and efficiency A New Approach to Preservation Metadata for Scientific Data : A Real World Example IGARSS Conference, Denver CO August 2, 2006

Conclusions • Overall PREMIS fits NSIDC needs well, with a few caveats: • Preservation level does not map • Data sets have versions • PREMIS schema is flat; but, data typically is dealt with as a hierarchy • PREMIS preservation rights are probably not as important as data responsibilities for science data • Digital libraries and data centers have much to learn from each other A New Approach to Preservation Metadata for Scientific Data : A Real World Example IGARSS Conference, Denver CO August 2, 2006
