Starfish facts An echinoderm is a kind of sea animal with spiny skin. Starfish cannot swim but crawl and climb Starfish breathe through their feet (feeding tube) Starfish don't have eyes, but on the tip of each of each arm they have an "eyespot The mouth of the starfish is on their underside, in the middle. They push their stomach inside shells and slowly digest the fish.

Ichthyology The study of fish
Living things are made of cells • Unicellular- one cell • Multicellular – many cells • In multicellular organisms, cells have to differentiate during development and become specialized for specific functions
Living things reproduce to make more living things • Sexual reproduction- requires exchange of genetic information and increases genetic diversity • Asexual reproduction-no exchange of genetic information and offspring are clones of parent
Living things are based on a universal genetic code • Deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA Offspring resemble parents because of how info is transmitted in DNA
Living things grow and develop • Growth – increase in the number of cells, so increase in size • Development – changes in an organisms form or function
Living things obtain and use energy • Metabolism – all the chemical rxns that occur in the body including the building (anabolism) and breaking down (catabolism) of molecules
Living things respond to their environment • Stimulus – something that causes a response in an organism. Can be external stimulus (outside the body) or an internal stimulus (inside the body) • Response – reaction to a stimulus
Living things maintain a stable internal environment • Homeostasis – maintaining a constant internal environment • Ectothermic – relies on environment to regulate body temp • Endothermic – uses metabolic energy to regulate body temp
Living things, as a group, change over time • Evolution – a change and adaptation in a group of organisms over time
Quick review Characteristics of Living thing Made up of cells Reproduces Grows and develop Obtain and use energy Respond to environment Has DNA Maintains stable internal environment Changes over time
If you have the ability to create a living thing At the bottom of your note: • Write what kind of organism it would be? • Give it a name • What characteristics would it have to be classified as a living thing • Draw and color your organism
