  1. AP ChemistryUnit 12 - Electrochemistry Lesson 2 – Voltaic Cells Book Section: 20.3

  2. Voltaic Cells (Galvanic Cells) • A voltaic cell is a chemical concept that led to the manufacture of batteries. • There are three major components to a voltaic cell: • Anode – oxidation reaction • Cathode – reduction reaction • Salt bridge – replaces ions to keep solutions neutral

  3. Describing a Voltaic Cell • Cr2O72-(aq) + 14H+(aq) + 6 I-(aq) 2 Cr3+(aq) + 3 I2(s) + 7 H2O(l) • A solution containing K2Cr2O7 and H2SO4 is poured into one beaker, and a solution of KI is poured into another. A salt bridge is used to join the beakers. A metallic conductor that will not react with either solution (such as platinum) is suspended in each solution, and the two conductors are connected with a wire and a voltmeter. • Indicate the reaction at the anode, the reaction at the cathode, the direction of electron migration, the direction of ion migration, and the signs of the electrodes.

  4. Homework: 20.24, 26 • Friday: Additional Equilibrium Topics Exam • Spectrophotometer Lab – Mon 4/4 • 10 more class days of AP Chemistry! (7 more lessons)
