Background The ZS story • ZS Associates is a global sales and marketing consulting company started about 30 years ago by two professors at Northwestern University. We are a group of people focused on and expert in sales and marketing issues dedicated to client success. ZS is now in 11 countries with 20 offices and 2000 people. • The first attorney was hired in 2004, focusing initially on contracts. It quickly became obvious more help was needed and ZS hired roughly a person a year. • The legal team was focused on client contracting support and did not spend much time supporting internal initiatives.
The Problem The Problem….Growth in the business was leading to unrelenting demand for urgent legal services • Highly customized legal services: dedicated personnel to client teams • Did not seem sustainable given the high cost of delivery • Growing work loads leading to stressed lawyers • Expensive! The Legal team is a cost to the firm • Email was main communication method and everyone’s inbox was full • Legal team’s tracking tool – an excel tool -- was breaking and making it hard to track matters • Legal needs outside of the US caused us to hire attorneys in India and so the legal team needed to coordinate across multiple offices and time zones • Firm ethos – always seeking to lower internal costs
The Process The Process – ZS legal reinvented itself as ZS Lean Legal • Team meeting to define the problem and come up with a solution • positions • Developed Mission Statement • Sent out RFP to LPO providers and technology company • RFP presentations by finalists and selection of LPO and technology • Implement the solution by • Dedicating one person to work with LPO and one person to work with Onit • Developing playbook for LPO • Time • Rollout changes to firm • Gradual • Formal announcement • Training
