LHC Kinematics/QCD evolution Is this a region of “safe –x”??? ? Evolution of PDFs to high Q2 & low x is important at the LHC Precision? Level of approximation? CCFM/BFKL?, non-linear effects? Test it at HERA!!
Process Events/sEvents/yearOther machines W e 15108 104 LEP / 107 Tev Z ee 1.5107 107 LEP 0.8107 104 Tevatron 105 1012108 Belle/BaBar 0.001104 (m=1 TeV) H 0.001104 (m=0.8 TeV) Black Holes 0.0001 103 MD=3 TeV n=4 Event Rates for pp at s=14 TeV • In the first 3 minutes at 1033cm-2s-1 • LHC will produce per experiment: • ~5000 W,e decays • ~ 500 Z,e decays • >2.107 bottom quark pairs ~150 top quark pairs • ~10 Higgs particles (MH=120 GeV) • ~20 gluino pairs with mass 500 GeV • A quantum black hole (MD = 2TeV) • …. • Startup luminosity at 10/14 TeV will be much lower, perhaps like 1031-1032cm-2s-1 (less bunches/current) • Record ~ 20K events/30Gbyte
QCD Studies @ LHC Huge cross sections: Eg for 1 fb-1 ~ 10000 events with ET> 1 TeV 100 events with ET> 2 TeV E.g. Jet Physics • PDFs • Jet shape • Underlying event • s • Diffraction • BFKL studies • low-x • New physics? • … Understanding QCD at 14 TeV will be one of the first topics at LHC …and a whole b-physics and top-physics program
Early Soft Minimum-Bias Measurements The pile-up for the future: ~4 events at low and ~20 events at high luminosity Charged particle density LHC? • Energy dependence of dN/d? • Vital for tuning UE model • Only requires a few thousand events. • PYTHIA models favour ln2(s); • PHOJET suggests a ln(s) dependence. At 14 TeV startup!!
New Physics with Jets Eg Contact Interactions Using dijet event ratios in Test up to ~ 10 TeV during ‘09 already
W and Z Boson Production Event signatures
Parton Distributions % Precision on the PDFs Brian Foster (DIS08)
Sin2eff Measurements Forward backward asymmetries in Z decays
W Mass Determination Eg CMS PTDR with 1 (10) fb-1 determine MW to 20-40 (10-20) MeV
W,Z+ jets Measurements Important background for searches for new physics, eg SUSY…
Summary • Experiments at the LHC eagerly awaiting data. • Early on: no lack of statistics, sensitivity to rare processes • QCD • MC understanding with early data • Underlying event studies (multiple interactions) • New regime for jet data already with 10 fb-1. New physics at high PT? • Electroweak Measurements • Improve constraints on SM parameters (couplings, mass, production) • Ultimately MW ~ 10 MeV, sin2eff ~ 10-4 • Di-boson studies with starting with ~100 pb-1 • Systematics will very fast become an issue • B physics • Initial program: Testing QCD in new energy regime. Later BSM…
Cross Sections In 2008 we have to rediscover the Standard Model at 10/14 TeV and compare to calculations and generators. …And tune generators
