  1. What a Seed Needs: Pre-Lab Assessment This formative assessment is a modified true/false quiz. Each of the following statements is either true or false. If the statement is true, simply put a “T”. If the statement is false, however, put an “F”, and correct the underlined portion of the statement to make it true. Example: The energy needed for seeds to germinate is stored in plants in the form of SUGAR. ANS: False; Starch

  2. Auxins are used to artificially preserve plants and prevent senescence. Cotyledons help protect the developing embryo from injury, and prevent the seed from desiccating. Unlike other plant hormones, cytokinins are found in both plants and animals.

  3. 4. Germination of seeds can be recognized by the emergence of the root tip, or epicotyl. 5. Physiological dormancy is seen in apple seeds, which need to be exposed to freezing temperatures in order to ensure that seeds don’t germinate until conditions are proper. 6. Plant shoots, or plumules, which contain the stems and leaves, exhibit a negative gravitropism.

  4. 7. Plants that bend their stems and aim their leaves at a light source are exhibiting positive photoperiodism. 8. Ethylene induces ripening, encourages epinasty, abscission, and senescence. 9. Plant hormones are biotic influences on plants.

  5. 10. Plant responses to both light and gravity are enabled by the plant hormone auxin. ***BONUS*** Describe what nastic movement in a plant is. Name a plant you might see such movements demonstrated in.
