Chapter 17 Configuring a LAN • Setting Up the Hardware • Connecting the Computers • Gateways and Routers • Network Interface Card (NIC) • Configuring the Systems • system-config-network: • iwconfig • Setting Up Servers • More Information
Setting up the Hardware • Computers with Network interface cards or network adapters • Cabling or wireless hardware • Hub or switch • Router if going outside of your LAN • ISP information (IP address or DHCP)
Connecting the Computers • Cabling • Coaxial bus network (NOT) • Cat 5 or 5e or 6 cable with connectors • Hubs • Passive – simply connects all nodes together • Active – a switch: • Switches • Connect all station one-to-one as called upon • Routers • Connect to other networks
Network Interfaces (NICs) • Check web sites to see what NICs are supported for your version of OS • Make sure you have latest drivers • Check all “README” files especially if you are installing a wireless NIC
Configuring the system • Use kudzu to autodetect hardware and install software • Obtain networking information from sys admin or use DHCP (i.e. ISP) • Use NAT and private IP addresses when possible
system-config-network • Use to add a device • Configure your network settings • Configure or add to your routing tables • Configure or add to your hosts file
iwconfig – Wireless Configuration • Use either system-config-networks or iwconfig • Use to set up WEP key: # iwconfig eth1 key 19BDFEED43229 • Use auto mode to set up ad hoc or infrastructure mode: # iwconfig eth1 mode Auto • Use iwconfig to set up ESSID (extended service set ID) # iwconfig eth1 essid “My wireless Network”
Setting up Servers • DNS • NIS • NFS • OpenSSH • DHCP • Samba
