  5. Key Words in Watershed: • Streamflow: Water collecting in a stream. Originates from rain, surface runoff or groundwater. Santa Ynez River flowing into Cachuma Reservoir

  6. Key Words in Watershed: • Stream banks: The sides of a stream holding water inside the channel. an old river = has meanders along the stream banks Santa Ynez River near Gibralter Reservoir

  8. Key Words of Watershed • Erosion: Sediment that comes off a streambed or bank and is transported by water in a stream • Deposition: Sediment that comes to rest in a stream channel after being transported by water.

  10. Water table: Top level of water collected below the ground. • Groundwater: Water stored in the pores, cracks, and between particles of sand and gravel below the surface. • One of Earth’s most valuable natural resources

  11. Aquifer--Layer of sand, gravel or rock capable of transmitting water • Permeability—a property of rock or soil that allows water to flow through (plastic bag vs. cloth) • Porosity: how much water-holding space is in ground materials. Porosity Permeability

  12. Aquifer Size, Movement & Water Table • Aquifers can cover hundreds of square miles & hundreds feet thick. • Rate of movement of ground water varies due to rock formations it is moving through • Once water percolates into ground water, it starts to move slowly down the gradient!

  14. Assignment: • You will be learning about the watershed of Santa Barbara County. In order to do this you will: • Use the key words in water shed to complete the crossword and word search. (You may need to use a map or the Internet to help you locate the names of the reservoirs of our county) • Create a stream table and explain what affect urbanization has on watershed. • Complete the lab: Color Me a Watershed • Come up with a plan for water conservation in our county. What can WE, as individuals, do to help conserve water?
