  1. FACTORING TRINOMIALS with leading coefficient to

  2. Remember There are many different methods to use when factoring. To be consistent, we will continue to use the tic-tac-toe method.

  3. Remember to check for GCF first!! NO GCF? (1)(84) = -5 No (2)(42) = -5 No (3)(28) = -5 No (4)(21) = -5 No (6)(14) = -5 No (7)(12) = -5 Yes!! If +7 and -12 (1)(4) = -4 Yes (2)(2) = -4 No – same signs will give positive answer • Place first term in first spot • Place last term in next spot • Multiply these two • Now factor down column 3. List all the factors and choose the ones that will add/subtract to give you the middle term. (1)(21) No – look at the other products (3)(7) Yes • Next, factor the middle column down. • Last, factor the first column down. • Check yourself, multiply ACROSS (L to R) all rows and UP all columns to see if you get the correct products.

  4. Remember to check for GCF first!! NO GCF? • Place first term in first spot • Place last term in next spot • Multiply these two • Now factor down column 3. List all the factors and choose the ones that will add/subtract to give you the middle term. (1)(9) No, 9 isn’t a factor of 15. (3)(3) YES (1)(25) No, look at the other products (5)(5) Yes (1)(225) = -30 No (5)(45) = -30 No (15)(15) = -30 Yes if (-15)(-15) • Next, factor the middle column down. • Last, factor the first column down. • Check yourself, multiply ACROSS (L to R) all rows and UP all columns to see if you get the correct products.

  5. Remember to check for GCF first!! NO GCF? Put in descending order first!! (1)(200) (2)(100) (4)(50) (5)(40) (8)(25) = 33 (1)(20) (2)(10) (4)(5) Yes (1)(10) (2)(5) Yes Now follow the same steps! Don’t forget to check yourself, multiply ACROSS (L to R) all rows and UP all columns to see if you get the correct products.

  6. Remember to check for GCF first!! NO GCF? Put in descending order first!! (1)(40) (2)(20) (4)(10) (5)(8) Yes If -5 & +8 (1)(20) (2)(10) (4)(5) Yes (1)(2) Yes Now follow the same steps! Don’t forget to check yourself, multiply ACROSS (L to R) all rows and UP all columns to see if you get the correct products.

  7. Remember to check for GCF first!! NO GCF? Put in descending order first!! Don’t forget to check yourself, multiply ACROSS (L to R) all rows and UP all columns to see if you get the correct products.

  8. Remember to check for GCF first!! NO GCF? Put in descending order first!! Don’t forget to check yourself, multiply ACROSS (L to R) all rows and UP all columns to see if you get the correct products.
