Definition • The social cognition learning model asserts that culture is the prime determinant of individual development. Humans are the only species to have created culture, and every human child develops in the context of a culture. Therefore, a child’s learning development is affected in ways large and small by the culture–including the culture of family environment–in which he or she is enmeshed. Role of Social Interaction in Cognitive Development • Social learning comes before development • Cultural development occurs twice -interpsychological -intrapsychological • Emphasis on the role of society

Zone of Proximal Development • Zone between students ability to solve a problem independently and students ability to perform with guidance
Alexander Luria • Heavily influenced by Len Vygotsky • Worked hand in hand with Vygotsky to "discover the way natural processes such as physical maturation and sensory mechanisms become intertwined with culturally determined processes to produce the psychological functions of adults." • Luria would help to understand how society influenced the development of children
Lev Vygotsky and His Theories • Russian Psychologist in the early 20th century • Social interaction plays a fundamental role in the development of cognition • "Every function in the child's cultural development appears twice: first, on the social level, and later, on the individual level” • Language must be mastered before “inner speech” can take place
