GOALS • Define the utility of electronic medical records (EMR) in the primary care setting • Review the literature pertaining to electronic clinical decision support • Consider some examples of clinical decision support application • Draw some conclusions and come up with some mechanisms for implementation
DEFINITIONS • What is an “EMR”? • Xerox machine: • Fax/scanner/printer • We say EMR but most commonly we mean: • Computerized physician order entry (CPOE) • Electronic health record itself – the chart proper • Clinical decision support system (CDSS) • May also be tied to an imaging server (PACS)
BENEFITS: THEORY AND PRACTICE • Benefits: Theoretical • CPOE : • Cuts down on paper • Tracking of orders • Billing • May be safer in terms of avoiding legibility errors • EHR: • Portability: global accessibility • Legibility • Single source summary of preventative care services • Standardization of how documentation is structured • Flowsheets
Moving Forward • Continuity of Care Document has potential to bridge some inter-operability issues • XML based • Universal translator for Star Trek fans • Further research is needed once we re-focus and overcome some communication barriers
