Company Background Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was founded in Beijing in 1949, one month after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. As the nation’s highest academic institution in natural sciences and its supreme scientific and technological advisory body, and national comprehensive research and development center in natural sciences and technology. In 2008, CAS spin-off companies reached 30 billion dollars and through technology transfer to local enterprises, achieved sales of 16 billion dollars. Chinese Academy of Science ZL EOR Chemicals Ltd. (Canada) ZL Petrochemicals Co.,Ltd (China) JCT Consultores
Company Background ZL designs, develops and provides chemically enhanced oil recovery (CEOR) technologies that increase the effectiveness of oil field water flooding and improves oil recovery. ZL’s produces and technology had been successfully applied to over 1000 well groups in China, at the most critical oil field conditions. Established in 1995, ZL is now the largest privately owned EOR PAM producer in China. Chinese Academy of Science ZL EOR Chemicals Ltd. (Canada)/ZL Petrochemicals Co.,Ltd (China) JCT Consultores
Company Background Juan Carlos Trombetta (JCT Consultores) has been a coach and consultant to local and foreign companies since 2002. Previously, Mr. Trombetta was the country manager for a multinational polymer manufacturer. He has extensive experience in the development and application of liquid-solid separation processes, specializing in oilfield water treatment. In addition, Mr. Trombetta has developed expertise in chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR), including product selection and application of alkaline-surfactant-polymer (ASP), surfactant-polymer (SP) and polymer flood (PF) projects as well as design of EOR injection facilities Chinese Academy of Science ZL EOR Chemicals Ltd. Keynote speakers Dr. Wu graduated from Beijing Normal University in 1985, where he majored in chemistry. In 2000, he obtained his Doctoral degree from University of Tokyo. After returning from Japan, he dedicated his research to EOR chemistries and has over 11 years of experience in the EOR industry with a strong focus on salinity and temperature resistant polymer technology and Nano polymer technology. He work has led to the successful commercialization of technology in over 400 well groups in Daqing, Changqing, Shengli, Henan, Xinjiang oil fields. Dr. Feipeng Wu, Ph.D. Chem. Ryan. Devlin, B.Sc. Chem.
Keynote speakers Ryan has worked in the specialty chemical and engineering community for 16 years, specializing in polymer chemistry and technical business development. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Molecular Biology. Ryan is very active in the water resources community in Western Canada and more recently, the enhanced oil recovery industry. Ryan will be our keynote speaker on the Nano-sphere technology and polymers. Dr. Feipeng Wu, Ph.D. Chem. Ryan. Devlin, B.Sc. Chem.
Nano-sphere technology • Purpose of the technology: • To make reservoir more homogenousand in doing sodisplace the oil in the relatively low perm regions of the reservoir. • The result is an increase in oil production and a decrease in the water cut over time • - Very high temperatures (up to~130°C) • - High salinities (up to ~300,000mg/L). • - Severe heterogeneity (0.1mD v.s. 8,000mD) When to apply… Nano-spheres are much less susceptible to geological conditions than other chemical technologies.
Nano-sphere technology Nano-sphere chemistry will not permanently block the pore opening. It will continue to advance through the less permeable zones due to its elasticity. Oil water Roadblock of water flow Initial Pre-expansion size 50 -100 nano meters Post expansion Size @ <1 Micron
Nano-sphere technology Typical example for oil water cut of injecting 6 months Nano
Nano-sphere technology Injection system injection Water: current water used in the field. Injection equipment: storage tank (or totes) valves, metering pump, and static mixer (optional). Easy to operate. No large initial investment. No produced fluid treatment.
Salinity and temperature resistant polymer technology • Why continue the research? • Fresh water usage restrictions; • Large reservoir of high temp high salinity. • Limitation of Current polymer technology; • Polymer is still a very effective CEOR tool • To completely dissolve in high salinity water; • To maintain high apparent viscosity at high temperatures and high salinity • To provide long term thermal stability. Objectives Introducing the Micro-block structure PAM Template polymerization
Salinity/temperature resistant polymer technology salt+high temperature Normal HPAM Tangled randomly, Hydrodynamic volume decreased salt+high temperature ZL PAM III Rigidity increased and the hydrodynamic volume maintained
