Experimental Design Considerations • Design: Are you using an experimental design approach with an IV, DV, control and test group? • Reliability: Can your results be replicated? • Construct Validity: Do your variables measure what they intend to measure? • External Validity: Can your results to be generalized to real-world settings? • Significance: Are your results statistically (p>=.05) and practically significant?
Practical Significance: Effect Size “The effect size helps us to know whether the difference observed is a difference that matters” Example Mean age of girls in Educ391= 24, SD=2 Mean age of guys in Educ391= 30, SD= 5 Effect Size = 1.57! Practically Significant
Once upon a time, there was a snowman living in a cold island. He was made of snow, carrots and wood and wore a striped blue scarf around his neck. The snowman was ill and his nose was dripping because of the cold he caught. The doctor came to see him. He brought a book and some bandages with him.
