By Kenneth Tan Jun Wei, Li Chen Yi and Arthur Leow Kai-Wei First thought up by Democritus, this was the first proposed model of an atom. Simply put, atoms were indivisible balls of matter, and could not be broken down any further. The Changing Model of the Atom In the year 1800, John Dalton proposed a new theory for the atom, which he came up with after years of experimentation. J.J. Thompson discovered that within the atom there are electrons and protons, and proposed the ‘Plum Pudding’ model of the atom After several experiments, Ernest Rutherford decided that the inside of an atom must be mostly empty space. Most of the mass in an atom was in the center.
