  3. Curriculum Based MeasurementsCBMs Data-Driven Instruction for Special Educators Objective Special Educators will be able to develop a plan for how to put CBM theory into practice. • Guiding Questions • What are CBMs? • Why do we need them? • How do we decide what to collect? • How can we realistically collect them? • What do we do with the data?

  4. 1) What are Curriculum Based Measurements? • CBMs are tools that help us… • Determine academic skill deficit rank/compare student performance against research-based norms • Determine insufficient progress measure student progress in basic academic skills

  5. 2) Why do we need to collect CBM data? • In theory… • Identify whether or not students are performing at/above/below grade level expectations • Calculate a student’s weekly rate of improvement • Calculate the weekly rate of improvement the student must attain to close the gap

  6. 2) Why do we need to collect CBM data? • In theory… • Identify whether or not students are performing at/above/below grade level expectations • Calculate a student’s weekly rate of improvement • Calculate the weekly rate of improvement the student must attain to close the gap • In practice… • Eligibility for sped services • Progress monitoring IEP goals • Drive instructional decisions • Share academic growth with students and parents

  7. 3) How do we decide what CBM data to collect? • In theory… • Refer to DPS website: • “SLD Determination - Insufficient Progress” • In practice… • For ALL students in Sped or SIT – • CBM in all areas of academic deficit • Pick the most appropriate CBMs for reading/writing/math • Frequency = every 5 hours of instruction on particular CBM skill

  8. 4) How can we realistically collect CBMs? • ?

  9. 4) What do we do with the data? • ?
