Is rutgers safe? : “But over the last few weeks, people other than students have been entering the houses on Stone Street. In two recent attacks there, three young women were raped and at least four young men were beaten and robbed.” “Safety is a complicated issue at Rutgers…a limited supply of housing on or near the campus has led many students to live elsewhere in New Brunswick. No longer ensconced in a centralized enclave more or less protectable by the authorities, they are randomly mixed in with the general population.” “The dispersal of students throughout the city clearly does not make things safer for them.” ''I go to bed and hope nobody punches the window into my house. I've heard so many stories. It seems to be getting worse.''
Is Rutgers safe? • RutgersFest Fight (2011) • RutgersFest Shooting (2011) • Rutgers Student hit by patrol car (2012)
Campus Services • 44 Rutgers Police Officers • One CPO (Community Policing Officer) per campus. Conducts monthly Safety Walk with campus dean and RHA member • Safety Walks (monthly campus inspections) • Traffic Unit • Unarmed, student employees of RUPA • Unarmed security guards • “Crime Alerts” through text and email • Blue Lights • RUPD escorts for students, faculty and staff upon request • Knight Mover Shuttle
Campus services: Are they enough? Blue Lights, or towers that give students direct contact with emergencies services, are scattered throughout the Rutgers campuses. But are they enough? Most students don’t even take notice of them; in the face of an emergency, they would most likely use their cell phone. “I couldn’t even tell you where there is one [blue light].”—Nicole Fino, Rutgers junior “You mean lights that are blue? No? Oh! I’ve never noticed them.”—Tram Nguyen, Rutgers sophomore
What about off campus Safety? • Students living in houses and apartments off campus do not enjoy the benefits of on campus security. And, because most crime occurs off campus, students who do not live in Rutgers Residence Halls are in danger. • Housing is not guaranteed after a students sophomore. Some are forced to live off campus, as a result of a high lottery number or low finances. Rutgers does not extend its services (blue lights, RUPD, bus routes) to off campus locations). • “Safety needs to be both a university and a city priority.” • —Jessica Ray, 19, Rutgers sophomore
