How to Plan and Run a successful Simulation Kevin V. Stevens, RN, MSN, CHSE Director, Center for Clinical Performance and Simulation Washington State University College of Nursing
What is simulation? Is there need for simulation-based education ?
Simulation-based Education • Facilitate the link between theory and practice • Improve: • patient safety (refine clinical skills) • critical thinking/decision making • team skills/communication • Evaluate learning across multiple domains
PLAN • Decide what needs are: • WHY need a simulation? • WHO is the simulation for? • WHEN in the semester should it be scheduled? • WHERE should it be done, classroom, sim room, post conference room • HOW should it be done • Props, manikin • Supplies • Faculty
PLAN • Where to get your simulation? • Develop/write or purchase your Simulation • Templates (many available out there) • Provides guidance on how to develop a simulation • Prep sheets
PLAN • Scheduling • How many students will go through a simulation? • How many times will they come in during the semester? which courses? • Will they come in as part of clinical time or on different day?
PLAN • How do you put multiple simulations together? • Sim kits • Organize supplies, meds
Facilitate • Pre brief • Shift report • Review of objectives • Orientation • Realism (moulage, props) • Debrief
