Biodiesel “ There are so many different grades of biodiesel that people will be confused as to what to use and therefore will not buy it.“ By: Deanne Young, Jamie Henderson, Maureen Dunn, and Nancy Ta
Presentation Overview • Overview of Biodiesel • Grades • Blends • Where confusion lies
Overview • Where • How • Benefits • Down side
Grades of (bio)diesel • There are no grades of biodiesel, there are blends of biodiesel. • Biodiesel is made up of diesel, which has grades.
Blends of Biodiesel • ASTM (American Society of Testing Materials) define regulations for all fuels in the US, including biodiesel blends: • B100—100% Biodiesel • B20—20% biodiesel and 80% petrol-diesel fuel. • B5—5% biodiesel 95% petrol-diesel • B2—2% biodiesel 98% petrol-diesel
Conclusion • There are two types of grades: Grade 1 and Grade 2. Both have low sulfur content. • There are three common ASTM approved blends of Biodiesel: • B20, B5 and B2. • B20 is the most commonly used. • Confusion lies in switching between biodiesel and diesel and biodiesel use verses biodiesel grades.
