  2. Romanticism 18-19th century cultural movement Began in Germany & England Influenced by folklore & historical tales, and fed by nationalism Included art, music & literature Aspects are religion, exoticism, individualism, emotion and nature

William Wordsworth • ON THE EXTINCTION OF THE VENETIAN REPUBLIC, 1802 • by: William Wordsworth (1770-1850) • ONCE did she hold the gorgeous East in fee; • And was the safeguard of the West: • the worth Of Venice did not fall below her birth, • Venice, the eldest Child of Liberty. • She was a maiden City, bright and free; • No guile seduced, no force could violate; • And, when she took unto herself a mate, • She must espouse the everlasting Sea. • And what if she had seen those glories fade, • Those titles vanish, and that strength decay; • Yet shall some tribute of regret be paid • When her long life hath reach'd its final day: • Men are we, and must grieve when even the Shade • Of that which once was great is pass'd away.

  5. Ludvig van Beethoven • 1770-1827 • Romantic composer, classical composer • Became deaf at age 30 • Suffered from depression • An immense amount of music and personality is depicted in the movie Immortal Beloved • Ninth Symphony is best example of Romantic work

  6. Guiseppe Verdi • 1813-1901 • Italian nationalist & opera composer • Best known for Rigoletto, Requiem, Otello, & Falstaff • Examples of Aida are famous for the tenors who have sung, i.e. – Luciano Pavoratti

  7. Jacques-Louis David • 1748-1825 • Starts in Neoclassical style then moves to Romantic with nationalism of French Revolutions • See Oath of the Horatii, Death of Marat & Napoleon • Sympathizes with French revolution, but later pro-Napoleon

  8. Eugene Delacroix • 1798-1863 • Considered greatest French Romantic painter • Use of color, exotic locales, nationalism & emotion • Influences impressionist artists with color

  9. JMW Turner • 1775-1851 • English artist • Landscape • Incorporates Industrial Revolution into art • Recluse • Famous for Dido building Carthage, Rain, Steam and Speed, & Grand Canal, Venice

  11. Charles Dickens • 1812-1870 • British author • Prolific • Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities

  12. Honoré de Balzac • 1799-1850 • French journalist • Friends with many Romantic writers • Serialized works to gain most money • Criticized monarchies (Napoleon & Louis Philippe) • The Human Comedy

  13. HonoréDaumier • 1808-79 • French painter, satirist, sculptor, caricaturist • Focuses on lower classes • Shows compassion • Admired by other artists, even impressionists • Best known for 3rd class carriage, Gargantua & the Collector

  14. Gustave Courbet • 1819-77 • Considered best of realist painters • French • Mixes politics with art • Paints nudes • Famous for The Stone Breakers, Burial at Ornans & Artist’s Studio • Influnences impressionists

  15. Impressionism 19th century-20th century cultural movement Encompasses art, music & literature (mainly paintings) Tries to capture first glimpse of scene Uses unmixed paints Starts in France as reaction against realism Sets stage for modern art movements

  17. Maurice Ravel • 1875 - 1937 • Friends with Debussy • Meticulous, worked with all instruments • Series of accidents • Transporter in WWI • Famous for Bolero • Died of Pick’s Disease

  18. Claude Monet • 1840-1926 • Most famous painter • French • Caricaturist, landscape artist, impressionist • Blind by end of career • Famous for series of paintings • Started with Impression: Sunrise

  19. Edgar Degas • 1834-1917 • French painter, mostly pastels • Horses and dancers • Also known for portraits • Subjects off-center
