History of our environmental information system • Hertta is a third generation environmental information system of our organisation • In early1970’s the first one was developed and maintained in a software company • Between 1987-1991 the second one called YTJ was developed in-house • 1997 we began to build Hertta • The first version was published in 1999 • New subsystems have been added gradually • Since 2009 a new tecnical architecture and user interface desing have been adopted
System development • In-house development project for each subsystem • Topic experts and IT experts together during whole project • Many of our IT experts have also good knowledge of the subject (academic degree) • As much common and shared things as possible • All kinds of standards from the beginning • Naming conventions • Classifications and codes • Security issues
Data management 1/3 • Datasets are produced and collected to the system in various ways • Monitoring, research projects, surveys • Administration’s own activities • Activities subject to environmental permits • Cooperation partners • Enthusiasts
Data management 2/3 • Our aim is to put data to electrical format • only once • in the earliest possible phase • by those who have produced the data • We use as much common classifications as possible • ”code lists” shared with data producers
Data management 3/3 Data entry forms DB Analysis results Files from partners etc. Lims DB DB Results Automated field instruments Digital field instruments
