Ways of knowing, feeling and doing: Tip of the Iceberg From sink to source: • Are poor only the consumer or can they also be the provider of idea, innovations and institutional values • Are common people at the Bottom of all kinds of Pyramids? • Language shapes the habit of thought as linguists have taught us: let us look at the language we use for articulating how we know, feel and do any thing • Can we not say that many poor people are actually at the Top of The Innovation, value and ethical pyramids, • Fortune is thus at the Top of the innovation Pyramid
Why do we ignore the grassroots innovations so much • Why do find so little resources on www on grassroots innovations, keeping aside the resources shared by Honey Bee network? • Are we looking in wrong places, or looking for these wrongly or using wrong ‘spects’? • What is the probability that academics and activists around the world will spend at least a fraction of resources on augmenting learning among the grassroots innovators and traditional knowledge holders? • Will they learn any thing new by partnering with the innovators? • Will they learn to think • simply? • Frugally? • Simultaneously? • Multi-functionally?
How does nature innovate: • One does not always cope, but transcends!! In nature nothing is still, one does not stagnate, either we decay, or we grow. Innovations help us to grow and lack of them will help us decay. Choice is ours.
Kariya Vinodkumar, kutchh Inventors of India workshop, iima vinod karia, Kachh, Gujarat2006 how to make a windmill work at 5kph instead of minimum cutting speed of 7kph?Can ventury effect improve the efficiency of the windmill in deserts?

Let us look at the margins innovation insurgents: minds on the margins are not marginal minds…
IIP Dehradun says: • aluminum tawa or cooking plate gives 7.9% higher thermal efficiency (52.17%) compared to conventional Iron plate (44.27%) and ribbed bottom gives about extra 1.09 per cent over ordinary aluminum plate. • Fast cooking due to its higher thermal efficiency • Design of this ribbed plate is a registered design regn. Combining insect and an insect: new chemistry, new materials Several tribal and other farmers Bhogi lal Rajwadia, Rupji Bhai, and Mandaviya Bhai Vasava in Bharuch district have devised a unique method of pest control. about 8-10 farmers or laborers, stood in a line, put the leaves of a creeper (Combretum ovalifolium) in a shoulder bag and moved in the windward direction. Caught blister beetle from the air and crushed it with the leaves already collected while walking in the windward direction. The combined effect of insect and leaf extract seemed to produce some signals ( may be alarm pheromones) which repelled the insects. Such a heuristic of combining a plant and an insect extract perhaps doesn’t exist in modern science.
Semio-chemicals • Five new triterpenoid desmosides have been extracted from this species ( Rogers, 1989, Jr of Natural Products) –saponins which are known to have anti microbial, anti inflammatory properties. • Semio-chemicals open a new basis of partnership between people’s knowledge and formal scientific sector: Honey Bee network and FAB Lab network may forge a bridge from Grassroots to Global
Where are we heading Towards an inclusive, imaginative and innovative India and the world Honey bee network includes people who are creative, collaborative and compassionate
Institutional and technological innovations Technology is like words, institutions are like grammar and Culture is like the thesaurus
Goals ahead • 450,000 technology students, do we have a database of their projects • Access to workshops and labs for the grassroots innovators
Moulding the minds: Incorporating lessons from the unaided innovations as well as traditional knowledge in the curriculum at school and other educational levels. • Mind to markets: grassroots to global
GOLDEN TRIANGLE OF CREATIVITY Innovation Enterprise Investment
Grassroots to global When Periphery is the centre When margin becomes the mainstream When grassroots to global provides another model of globalization
China and India which have maximum cycles in the world could not think of this design
Kevin Davis’ feedback – “...the construction is outstanding it is exactly as advertised. The device worked perfectly. I climbed a 40 foot coconut tree very quickly and safely. I am impressed. The video was great …watched it one time set up the device… and started climbing tree. I would like to be your distributor for North and South America. I am willing to make an initial purchase of at least 25 units. I wish to proceed rapidly due to already getting inquiries and here in US no one has patience. Now that American Airlines has nonstop to Delhi I am eager to visit.”
But some problems remain • Why should some problems remain unsolved for so long, why are we so patient?
