  1. TWINCORE – Seminar Thursday April 18th, 2013, 5 p.m. TWINCORE Lecture Hall „Identification and Characterization of Endogenous Inhibitors and Enhancers of HIV Infection“ • Prof. Dr. Jan Münch • Out of the more than one million peptides present in • the human body only a minor part has been identified • and even less are functionally characterized. We have applied a unique strategy allowing for the identification of as-yet-unknown bioactive peptides/proteins by extracting them from huge amounts of body fluids or tissues. The systematic screening of these peptide libraries for factors modulating HIV infection has led to the identification of several novel peptides with unexpected modes of action. The most important findings including 1) the identification of a novel HIV fusion inhibitor and its clinical development, 2) the discovery of amyloid fibrils in semen as enhancers of viral infection and novel targets for HIV prevention, 3) the development of nanofibrils as retroviral transduction booster, and 4) the characterization of the first endogenous antagonist of a G-protein coupled receptor and HIV inhibitor will be discussed. • Who is Jan Münch? • since 2004 Juniorprofessor , since 2010 full professor at the Institute of Molecular Virology, University Clinic Ulm • Consultant ViroPharmaceuticals GmbH & Co.KG and Pharis Biotech GmbH & Co.KG • Co-founder and speaker of Ulm-Peptid Pharmaceuticals (U-PEP) • > 60 publications, 6 patents, 10 national and international awards Contact: Prof. Thomas Pietschmann TWINCORE, Centre for Experimental and Clinical Infection Research, Feodor-Lynen-Str. 7, 30625 Hannover, Phone: 0511 22002 7113
