  1. Time to Slim Down!

  2. Before beginning any new slim down activity, you need to consult a professional. You need to meet with Mrs. Glenn or Miss Hayes to have the following factors checked: • Index cards • General topic • Focus topic • Notes on the decade Congratulations! You can then request/check out a book and move on to a more rigorous exercise program – note taking.

  3. Note Taking Regime You already have mastered the first step of any note taking exercise program – learning how to make source cards and note cards. The next phase will ensure that all of your efforts will result in the desired effect.

  4. Time to get in Shape! The process: 1. Take your general topic idea 2. Brainstorm a list of possible subtopics connected to this. One of the subtopics IS your focus topic! 3. Highlight or star the 3 you are most interested in – one MUST be your focus topic. Ask yourself – are these related? Can I connect these? 4. You have now found your SLUGS!!!

  5. Let’s see this in action… 1. General topic: Pacific Theater (WWII) 2. Brainstorm list Iwo Jima Mt. Suribachi Battle of the Midway Purpose of islands Island hopping Code Talkers Bataan Death March (my focus topic) Casualties Outcome

  6. 3. Highlight and check if connected. Which ideas might work together? Iwo Jima Mt. Suribachi Battle of the Midway Purpose of islands Island hoppingCode Talkers Bataan Death March (my focus topic) Casualties Outcome Do you think I could easily connect the three bolded topics?

  7. What about these? Iwo Jima Mt. Suribachi Battle of the Midway Purpose of islands Island hopping Code Talkers Bataan Death March (my focus topic) Casualties Outcome What might be a good sequence for these topics?

  8. I now have my SLUGS for my general topic research!!! When it comes to looking up facts about the Pacific Theater, I only have to look for facts about: • Why the islands were important (purpose) • Bataan Death March (BDM) • Casualties (casualties) This get fit program is working!

  9. I don’t want to overdo it. Any suggestions? To help you from over exercising, here are some tips: • Before making a source card, make sure there is info you need connected to your slugs. • Correctly follow the note taking format. Get source cards initialed. • Since you will only be writing ONEbody paragraph for each of your slugs, you don’t need an exorbitant number of facts. Remember the body paragraph organizer? You really can only include 7-10 facts per paragraph. If you collect 10-12, you should have plenty of info to work with.

  10. Remember Your #1 Source! Before you go to a book from the cart, you will review the notes you have taken from your history book. If any of those notes match any of your slugs, copy that note to a note card. Include source #, slug, pg #, the paraphrased fact, and your initials. Use this source first!

  11. Okay…I think I am getting it, but I keep hearing people talk about “thumbnails.” Is that a new craze? Thumbnails is the next phase in the program. If you are anxious about what is next, you will select other “subtopics” from the decade that are of interest to you. These subtopics are new slugs! A successful exercise program is all about variety – so make sure you have a good mix of topics. (Fads, foods, music, movies, sports, politics, etc.) Choose what YOU like!

  12. Thumbnail Research This phase is exactly the same as what you will complete for the general topic. You will need 10-12 facts per thumbnail. Don’t worry, we will talk more about this when you are ready for it.

  13. Let’s Try It! I need an audience member who is ready to try the Get Fit and Slim Down program in front of the class with the guidance of professionals…

  14. Everyone! Take out a note card. Label it Get Fit – Slim Down! Write your general topic. General topic: _______________________ Write your focus topic. Focus topic: _______________________ Write your decade. Decade: _______________________

  15. Looks like… Get Fit – Slim Down! General topic: _______________ Focus topic: _________________ Decade: ____________________ Now brainstorm slugs (subtopics) for your general topic. Be sure to include your focus topic. Try to create a list of at least 6. Which three (including focus topic) best go together? Highlight or star them. These are your slugs!

  16. Here’s Your Get Fit – Slim Down Regime • Consult a professional for the go ahead • Check out/request a book • Complete the Get Fit-Slim Down brainstorm card. 4. Get this card initialed. While waiting for this consultation, start transferring useful notes from your notebook to note cards. 5. Show the notecards you have taken from the history book to get the “okay” to use books from the cart.

  17. Good luck! "Today's preparation determines tomorrow's achievement."
