  2. MATTHEW 26:36-56 • THE GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE. • “Olive Press.” • Some of the olive trees are estimated to be 2000 years old!

  3. WHAT IS THE CUP? • “The cup” --9 TIMES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT. • TWICE HERE (vv. 39 & 42). • “My Father, if it is possible , may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

  4. 1. PREMATURE DEATH • 26:38– “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.” • Luke 22:44– “His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.”

  5. 1. PREMATURE DEATH • Luke 22:43– “An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.” • But notice He did not say thank you My prayer is answered, “He prayed more earnestly…” (v. 44).

  6. 1. PREMATURE DEATH • Matthew 20:22-23-- Jesus asked James and John, “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?” • “We can.” • “You will indeed drink from my cup…”

  7. 2. FEAR OF SUFFERING • Jesus knew what was ahead. • Flogging could kill a man. 39 lashes was the limit in Israel, but not for the Romans. • Crucifixion was the most barbaric form of execution. Roman citizens were not allowed to be executed in this manner.

  8. 2. FEAR OF SUFFERING • Matt. 26:53– “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more then twelve legions of angels?” • Legion=6,000-7,000. One angel is enough, imagine 72,000-84,000!

  9. Psalm 22:14-18 • “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax, it has melted away within me. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; …they have pierced my hands and my feet…I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.”

  10. 3. TO BE BETRAYED • Matt. 26:24– “But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

  13. 4. TO BE MADE SIN FOR US • 2 Cor. 5:21– “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

  14. 4. TO BE MADE SIN FOR US • 1 Peter 2: 24– “He himself boreour sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.”

  15. 4. TO BE MADE SIN FOR US • Isaiah 53:4-6 -- “Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows… • “He was crushed for our iniquities…” • “The LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”

  16. 4. TO BE MADE SIN FOR US • Psalm 22:1– “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” • Matt. 27:46-- “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

  17. 4. TO BE MADE SIN FOR US • Galatians 3:13– “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”

  18. 4. TO BE MADE SIN FOR US • Matt. 26:42– “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”

  19. ROMANS 6:23 • “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
