What’s Our New Unit? • Read aloud: Marine biologist, Mark Moline, of California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo claims, “If you expect that you're just going to walk into a room and dazzle someone with your work, that might get you 60% to 70% of the way there.   3. It’s OK to feel Nervous "I can’t believe I agreed to do this speech. Look at all those people out there! My knees are shaking so much I can’t feel my legs. My stomach feels like I just went over the top of a roller coaster. My heart is beating so fast and hard my tie is jumping. I just want to scream and run away!"

  4. DID YOU KNOW… • Speaking in public is often cited as the number one fear of adults. • The Book of (fears) Lists places death in fifth place while public speaking ranks first.

  6. SPEECHES!!!! B) What is a speech? • Why are speeches given? • When are speeches given?

  7. Different Types of Speeches: (A/B partners: give an example of each) • Memorized • Impromptu or Extemporaneous • Informative • Persuasive • Argumentative • Special Occasion

  8. Your Quicktalk Directions: • Hear prompt 1 • Decide: Yes or No • Yes = have 30 sec. to think (plan speech). • No = pick a new # (then plan for 30 sec). • If no, you must respond to Prompt 2! (There is no going back or choosing a third number).

  9. Once You’ve Selected a ? • Plan on Whiteboard: clear answer to prompt, and 2 reasons • Add a hook and conclusion! • At 50 sec into your speech, I will wave a hand to signify you need to wrap it up (conclude).

  10. Grading • Outstanding, Satisfactory, Needs Improvement, or Unsatisfactory • Introduction • Conclusion • Eye contact • Voice • Diction • Poise Audience: active listeners will prepare for each speech + evaluate each speaker.
