  1. MITOSIS Cell Division

  2. CHROMOSOMES • Made of DNA and Protein • Each organism has a specific number • Example: Fruit Flies have 8, Humans have 46, Carrots have 16

  3. CHROMOSOMES • Not visible in most cells, except during cell division • Usually spread throughout the nucleus • When Mitosis starts, chromosomes condense • When visible, consist of 2 sister CHROMATIDS • Connected by CENTROMERE

  4. CELL CYCLE • Series of events a cell goes through as it grows and divides • INTERPHASE: period between cell divisions (has 3 phases) • G1: Most of the growing • S: Chromosomes Replicated • G2: organelles and molecules for cell division are made • M: Cell Division

  6. MITOSIS • 4 phases • Prophase • Metaphase • Anaphase • Telophase

  7. PROPHASE • First and longest phase • Chromatin condenses into chromosomes • Centrioles separate, move to opposite sides of cell • Spindle begins to form(pulls chromatids apart)

  8. METAPHASE • Chromosomes line up along the middle (equator) of the cell • Spindle fibers attach to centromeres • Meta: Middle

  9. ANAPHASE • Chromatids are pulled apart by the spindle fibers • Centromere is ripped apart • Chromatids move to opposite poles • ANA: Banana Split

  10. TELOPHASE • Chromosomes uncoil • New nuclear envelope forms • Spindle fibers break down

  11. CYTOKINESIS • Division of the cytoplasm • Not a 50%-50% split • BUT: both new cells receive enough cytoplasm to function
