Literacy @ Ardleigh Green Junior School Overview of Literacy • Literacy is taught for at least an hour each day across all year groups • In addition to this pupils will also spend time reading and practising spellings etc • Many aspects of literacy is cross-curricular • in nature
Literacy @ Ardleigh Green Junior School Overview of Literacy • Pupils are grouped in their classes by ability • Literacy lessons are planned in one of two ways; carousel (group work) and whole class teaching • At times a teaching assistant may support a particular group of pupils in their work
Literacy @ Ardleigh Green Junior School The Carousel Lesson • Each carousel lesson consists of:- • - 30 minutes whole class teaching • - 20 minutes independent/guided group work • - 10 minutes plenary • During the first 30 minutes the teacher focuses on whole class teaching of writing, punctuation, grammar etc • Each week the class will rotate between 5 different activities (writing, grammar, reading, ICT, speaking & listening) one of these activities will be the guided group which means • that the class teacher will work with one group each • day of the week. The speaking & listening group • presents to the whole class during the plenary
Literacy @ Ardleigh Green Junior School Whole Class Teaching • Whole class lessons have:- • - 15 minutes introduction to the activity • - 30/40 minutes whole class work • - 5/15 minutes plenary • During the first 15 minutes the class teacher will introduce the activity • Next the whole class works on a differentiated activity • In the plenary the class teacher will sum up the • Lesson and address any misconceptions
