WHAT IS AN ACCIDENT? • An accident is an unplanned event that results in injury or damage: • It could be someone with a broken arm, or a vehicle that has hit a garage door causing material damage • A near miss is a similar event where no one is injured or no damage occurs: • A brick falls off some scaffolding and hits the ground next to you BSC Level 1 Award in Health and Safety at Work Issue 1 – October 2010

TOO YOUNG TO DIE • A young person is seriously injured in a UK workplace every 40 minutes. In the last ten years, 66 under-19s have been killed at work. • A 16-year-old was killed on a construction site when he was struck by a structure weighing nearly two tonnes. He had only left school a few weeks before the incident. • A 17-year-old was crushed to death inside an industrial recycling machine.
