  1. -------------------- Lesson 7--------------------The Benefits of Righteousness(Romans 5:1-11)

  2. 3) Benefits of Righteousness (5:1-11)

  3. Romans 5:1 1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

  4. Romans 5:1 1Therefore being justified by faith, Therefore – on account of all the evidence presented thus far. Paul now offers seven benefits of being justified in Christ:

  5. Romans 5:1 1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: We have peace with God. The barriers that separated the Gentiles from the Jews, and both from God no longer exist.

  6. The veil that separated the people from God was torn in two. “the veil of the temple” Matthew 27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

  7. The wall that separated the Gentile from the Jew came down. Ephesians 2:14 For he is our peace, who hath made both [Jew and Gentile] one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; “the middle wall of partition”

  8. We have peace with God. • We have access into God’s grace. • We have the hope of glory.

  9. Romans 5:2 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. • We have peace with God. • We have access into God’s grace. • We have the hope of glory.

  10. Romans 5:2 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Ephesians 2:18 Forthrough him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Ephesians 3:12In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him. Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

  11. Romans 5:2 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. If you want to stand for Christ, you must learn to stand in his grace. Psalm 130:3If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? 2 Timothy 2:1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

  12. Romans 5:2 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. The “riches of the glory of this mystery” (that is, the justification of the Jews and Gentiles) is “Christ in you, the hope of glory”:

  13. Romans 5:2 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Colossians 1:25-27 25 Whereof I [Paul] am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; 26Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: 27To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

  14. Romans 5:2 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Our hope of glory is that one day we will be like him:

  15. Romans 5:2 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 1 John 3:2-3 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall belike him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

  16. We have peace with God. • We have access into God’s grace. • We have the hope of glory. • We glory in tribulations. This rather odd statement is clarified by what follows it:

  17. Romans 5:3-5 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. • We have peace with God. • We have access into God’s grace. • We have the hope of glory. • We glory in tribulations.

  18. Tribulation Patience Experience Hope

  19. Hope Tribulation Patience Experience The new mother feels overwhelmed. She learns to stay calm even when her baby is not. She learns that every crisis is not the end of the world. She anticipates seeing her child blossom into adulthood.

  20. Hope Tribulation Patience Experience Tribulation workethpatience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

  21. Romans 5:3-5 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. This hope is energized by God’s love. The next three verses focus upon the ultimate expression of the love of God:

  22. Romans 5:6-8 6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. This hope is energized by God’s love. The next three verses focus upon the ultimate expression of the love of God:

  23. Love is most keenly displayed when it is undeserved.

  24. Romans 5:6-8 6For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Love is most keenly displayed when it is undeserved. We were without strength – without God and without hope.

  25. Love is most keenly displayed when it is undeserved. We were without strength – without God and without hope. We were ungodly – unholy and profane.

  26. Love is most keenly displayed when it is undeserved. We were without strength – without God and without hope. We were ungodly – unholy and profane. We were sinners – lawless and disobedient.

  27. 1 John 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

  28. We have peace with God. • We have access into God’s grace. • We have the hope of glory. • We glory in tribulations. • We are saved from wrath.

  29. Romans 5:9-10 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. • We have peace with God. • We have access into God’s grace. • We have the hope of glory. • We glory in tribulations. • We are saved from wrath.

  30. WRATH Violent anger; vehement exasperation; indignation; The effects of anger. The just punishment of an offense or crime.  Godswrath in Scripture is his holy and just indignation against sin.

  31. Romans 5:9-10 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 1 Thessalonians 5:9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

  32. Jesus came to “deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage” (Hebrews 2:15). Knowing we have been saved from wrath, our fear of death has been replaced with a joyful anticipation of eternity.

  33. We have peace with God. • We have access into God’s grace. • We have the hope of glory. • We glory in tribulations. • We are saved from wrath. • We have joy in God. • We have the atonement. Jesus came to “deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage” (Hebrews 2:15). Knowing we have been saved from wrath, our fear of death has been replaced with a joyful anticipation of eternity.

  34. Romans 5:11 11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. • We have peace with God. • We have access into God’s grace. • We have the hope of glory. • We glory in tribulations. • We are saved from wrath. • We have joy in God. • We have the atonement.

  35. Romans 5:11 11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. Nehemiah 8:10b… for the joy of the LORD is your strength. Jesus was sustained in his agony on the cross by his joy for what he was accomplishing:

  36. Romans 5:11 11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. Hebrews 12:2-3 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. Because we know what awaits us, we can find joy in the unhappiest of times.

  37. ATONEMENT Agreement; concord; reconciliation, after enmity or controversy. In theology, the expiation of sin made by the obedience and personal sufferings of Christ.

  38. Our guilt credited to Jesus on the Cross. • We have peace with God. • We have access into God’s grace. • We have the hope of glory. • We glory in tribulations. • We are saved from wrath. • We have joy in God. • We have the atonement. Christ’s righteousness credited to us.

  39. 3) Benefits of Righteousness (5:1-11) 4) Contrast of Righteousness and Condemnation (5:12-21) • (Comparing our inheritance from Adam and from Christ)
